The Sundance Film Festival is an annual film festival organized by the Sundance Institute, and is recognized as the largest independent film festival in the United States. Established in 1978 in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the Utah/US Film Festival, it moved to Park City in 1981 and was renamed the Sundance Film Festival in 1991. The festival serves as a significant showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers, featuring competitive sections for dramatic and documentary films, both feature and short, alongside various out-of-competition programs. While historically held in Utah every January, the festival is slated to relocate to Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2027, with the 2026 festival being the last in Utah.
