The Sundance Film Festival is an annual film festival organized by the Sundance Institute, recognized as the largest independent film festival in the United States. Established in 1978 in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the Utah/US Film Festival, it moved to Park City, Utah, in 1981 and was renamed the Sundance Film Festival in 1991. The festival serves as a vital showcase for new works from American and international independent filmmakers, offering competitive sections for dramatic and documentary films, both feature and short, along with various out-of-competition sections. In March 2025, it was announced that the festival will move to Boulder, Colorado, starting with the 2027 edition, after taking place in Utah every January through 2026.
