The Macabro: Mexico City International Horror Film Festival, often referred to simply as Macabro, was founded in 2002 by filmmaker Edna Campos and is recognized as the first genre film festival in Mexico and the second in Latin America. Held annually for ten to eleven days in August, the festival showcases new independent horror films alongside classic and cult cinema, drawing approximately 40,000 attendees to live venues and over a million on social media. The festival is an independent cultural organization supported by entities such as the Mexico City Government, the Mexican Film Institute, and the National Film Archive. It features film exhibitions, Q&A sessions, master classes, retrospectives, and tributes, providing a platform for both established and emerging horror filmmakers.
