The Liberation Film Festival (LFF) is the official host of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. film screenings in San Francisco. Presented by the NorcalMLK Foundation in partnership with California Newsreel, the LFF is dedicated to bringing human-interest documentaries and short features to new and diverse audiences. It was launched in November of 2011 and premiered its first screenings in January of 2012. The festival runs concurrently with San Francisco's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday celebration events, taking advantage of the thousands of celebrants who attend every year in January. Since its founding, over 50 films have been screened at the LFF, and the film screenings are free and open to the public.
