The Kobani International Film Festival is an independent cultural platform dedicated to showcasing cinematic voices from around the world, with a particular emphasis on underrepresented regions and communities. Founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic by Komma e.V., a non-profit cultural organization of Kurdish and international filmmakers, the festival aims to build bridges between Kurdish and international cinema. Held in Bochum, Germany, it has steadily grown despite limited funding, receiving over 1,100 film submissions from 127 countries for its sixth edition in 2025. The festival also nurtures emerging talent through training workshops and translates reference books on cinema into Kurdish or Arabic to enrich regional film culture.
