The Cucalorus Film Festival is an annual film festival held in Wilmington, North Carolina, U.S.. Founded in 1994 by the independent filmmaking collective Twinkle Doon, it has grown to become one of the largest film festivals in the U.S. South. Unlike many festivals, Cucalorus is non-competitive and does not give out awards, instead focusing on fostering independent film and breaking down boundaries between artist and audience. The festival typically showcases around 100 to 150 independent and international films, often emphasizing works by women and people of color, and also incorporates performance art, theatre, and discussions on social justice. MovieMaker Magazine has recognized Cucalorus as "one of the coolest film festivals in the world" and "50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee".
