Create BYU Public Domain Film Festival Laurels

The BYU Public Domain Film Festival is an annual event hosted by the BYU Copyright Licensing Office, often in collaboration with the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications and School of Music. It challenges student filmmaking teams from BYU, BYU Hawaii, and BYU Idaho, to create original short films inspired by creative works that have recently entered the public domain. The festival began in 2019, celebrating works released in 1923, and has since grown into a multi-day event with a focus on teaching students about copyright law and its real-world application. Participants adapt public domain materials, with past festivals involving works from authors like Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle, and compete for prizes.
