The Alternative Film Video Festival was established in Belgrade, Serbia, in 1982, with a mission to explore and theorize movements in visual media and promote new creative possibilities in film and video. Initially named Alternative Film Festival, it broadened its scope in 1985 to include both film and video equally in its competition, changing its name to Alternative Film/Video. After a hiatus in 1990, the festival was re-established in 2003, becoming an international event in 2006, showcasing alternative, experimental, art, personal, and radical cinematic works.
